Did you ask me a question? I don´t think I´ve heard A dog barked at the sun That was stuck in a cloud Days stack up in silence Like trains in a tunnle The fountains have frozen In the empty white square A dog barks at the water That spans the still air Turning a corner I see you´re still there Did you ask me a question? It’s high time I heard: The sun in pink sandals Paints the back of a bird. The fountains are purple The dog finds a bone The square’s a dark circle That turns on its own. Your voice is a question In the silence we share; Your shadow’s a mirror: I see I’m still there. I ask you a question I don´t think you hear But the water is falling The sun disappears.

Creatures 03:47
Thousand different creatures Out in the water They said there were green ones They said there was blue I thought I saw violet A glimmer of scarlet Their colour is green Their bodies are blue Their vision is violet Their dreams are all scarlet And they wouldn't go far And they wouldn't go anywhere There shouldn't be green ones Call them off There shouldn't be blue ones Call them off There shouldn't be violet Call it off There shouldn't be scarlet Call it off There is no excuse for the light of day There is no excuse for the sighing of Thousand different creatures Out in the Water And they wouldn't go far And they wouldn't go anywhere You take them all
3.
To Deirdre 02:59
To Deidre who loved the pond The sun on the water The swan on the sun on the water The swan is as old as the pond And the rain makes little circles And the fish are swimming in circles And the swan is turning in circles Around the sun To Deirdre who loved the pond To Deirdre who’d seen it all The trees in the alley The wind in the trees in the alley The trees are as firm as the sun Yet the leaves start changing colours And the pond is covered with colours But the branches reach out for more And the wind is yearning for more And she was always longing for more So the water found her an answer

When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see, For all the day they view things unrespected; But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee, And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed. Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright, How would thy shadow's form form happy show To the clear day with thy much clearer light, When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so! How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made By looking on thee in the living day, When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay! All days are nights to see till I see thee, And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

about

First part of Berger´s debut album "Creatures".

First three songs on this EP emerge from a theatre collaboration with English playwright and director Richard Aczel and his theatre group Port In Air - so all songs on "Creatures I" are written in English.

Miriam wrote the soundtrack for the production "Hardly still walking, not yet flying" back then in 2015, each piece of music being just one and a half minutes long. Rediscovering the music years later, she decided to complete the songs - leading to a wonderful collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and theatre musician Radek Fedyk, who added his musical skills and magic, while Richard Aczel contributed another verse for "The Unanswered Question".

So here they are, these little creatures - all grown up and metamorphosed.

Plus: Something for the happy ending... "When Most I Wink" is based on Shakespeare´s sonnet No. 43. Miriam originally wrote it for the film "Das Theater träumt", a Theater Gütersloh production about the wild fantasies of a dreaming theatre, filmed during first lockdown in 2020.
